NFC East Watch: Redskins Pick Up RG3's Option

Robert Griffin III will now be in Washington through 2016

A week ago, Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III said he wasn’t really worried about the team picking up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract.

Now, he really doesn’t have to worry about it.

Washington has picked up the option, which will keep Griffin in Washington through 2016, Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan announced on Monday.

After a great rookie season, Griffin has had two rough, injury-hampered campaigns in a row. At the lowest point last year, he was benched in favor of Colt McCoy, but he took the starting role back when McCoy got hurt and Redskins’ head coach Jay Gruden said this offseason that, for now anyway, RG3 is their starter.

“It’s not about talking about it; It’s about being about it,” Griffin said, per “That’s what my goal is this entire offseason. You got to talk small, play big, take care of the little things for the big things and everything will fall into place.”
