Melton Missing OTAs No Surprise for the Cowboys

New defensive end Henry Melton is coming off a torn ACL

We learned this week that defensive end Henry Melton would be held out of OTAs, but Melton says that’s been the plan at Valley Ranch all along. Melton’s Cowboys debut will come in July when Dallas opens training camp, after he’s had a little more time to recover from the ACL tear that cut his season short last season in Chicago.

We were going to keep it strictly headed towards training camp so I can really get as strong as possible,” Melton said, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Like cornerback Mo Claiborne among others, Melton spent the first day of OTAs on Tuesday doing individual conditioning work on the sidelines, while the team went through team drills on the field.

But watching from afar, Melton has been impressed by what he’s seen from his fellow defensive linemen.

“There’s a lot of athletic guys we got,” Melton said. “There aren’t a lot of big names on it, but it’s like I told them before, it’s about making a name for yourself. No one knew who I was when I first started, so it’s all about making a name for yourself. Looking around this room, there’s a lot of guys that are going to. I think we’ve got a lot of key components to really get it done.”
