After Sunday night, a furious contingency of Dallas fans found themselves wondering why their beloved Cowboys ever went out and got Alex Barron from St. Louis, even if he came at the paltry price of fellow first round bust, Bobby Carpenter. This is the result of three penalties, one of which, of course, was a hold that negated what would have been a game winning touchdown.
The monumentally poor timing of the penalty was kind of remarkable, as we haven’t ( if memory serves) seen a game end in that manner, but the penalties themselves are to be expected. Barron has been the most penalized offensive lineman in the league over the past five seasons, edging out former Cowboy Flozell Adams for the dubious title.
Jerry Jones addressed his motivation in landing Barron in a recent interview, saying that, much like their approach with Flozell, the team landed Barron in hopes that the good (serviceable play on the line) would outweigh the bad (penalties).
“Flozell was the second most penalized player over a certain period of time there,” Jones said, per the Dallas Morning News. “And the thought process is hopefully the good will overcome the bad and the good things are worth the other things.
“We brought him in and [he] had five years of starting; that's as opposed to sometimes you go with the situation we had. When Bill Parcells was here we had times when we had two tackles out there that had no experience, they were rookies and we paid the price, by the way, when that happened too.”
