Though there are plenty of quality programs in Class 4A and below, make no mistake about it, the most high-profile high school football in the state is played the Class 5A level.
And in this decade, North Texas has ruled the roost when it comes to 5A football, as the Metroplex has had a state champion in either 5A Division I or Division II every year since 2004, having won seven in one of the two divisions since then.
But as my boy Matt Wixon wrote, a team with two of those titles, Euless Trinity, is the lone representative for North Texas in Class 5A remaining in the postseason this year, as the Trojans (12-2) will take on Round Rock Stony Point (13-1) in the Class 5A Division I semifinals this weekend.
So if Trinity doesn't move on to the final (they are the underdog to Stony Point), it will be a huge moment for the rest of the state, as it will leave the state's most powerful region with no big-school representatives in next week's title games.
Trinity and RB Terrance Tusan will look to advance to its third state championship game in five years (it won the other two), but will need to slow a potent Stony Point offense.
And by the way, give me Abilene to win the Division II title. Gotta rep my boys from West Texas.
