Memo to new Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin: Look out, brotha, when you play the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013, they might be trying to outscore your age.
The Eagles have reportedly hired Oregon head coach Chip Kelly, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, to take over for the departed Andy Reid after an earlier courtship with the coach ended with him reportedly saying he was staying at Oregon and no longer flirting with the NFL. That was after his Oregon team beat Kansas State, 35-17, in the Fiesta Bowl earlier this month.
Just for reference sake, Kelly's Oregon team put up more than 700 yards of offense on Kiffin's USC defense this season. Granted, Kiffin's defense was awful and had no talent, and Kelly's offense at Oregon has long been a machine, but it's a point that still has to hold some water.
OK, Cowboys fans, pick your jaw up off the ground now.
There's been a lot of talk of whether Kelly's offense will translate to the NFL, but remember, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick met with Kelly prior to the season and picked up on his fast-paced attack, and well, the Patriots offense is still pretty good.
Also, if any team is prepared to run Kelly's offense, it might just be the Eagles', which regardless of their awful season in 2012 still have a lot of talent, especially on offense. They have two really good running backs in LeSean McCoy and Bryce Brown and receivers like DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, not to mention a speedy tight end in Brett Celek. The only question mark, well besides their injury-riddled, bad offensive line, is at quarterback where they have a downtrodden Michael Vick and second-year QB Nick Foles, who took over for Vick in 2012 after Vick had a concussion.
If Kelly can get his line shored up and figure out his quarterback situation, the NFC East could be in for a shock. Get ready, folks.
