The Dallas Cowboys have yet to make a decision on the future of right tackle Doug Free, a man attached to a massive cap number who underachieved monumentally last season. According to Jerry Jones, this week’s NFL Draft could influence the team’s decision.
“I think it’s notable that we haven’t said where we are and he hasn’t said where he is relative to his status as we go into this draft,” Jones said at a pre-draft press conference on Monday, per the Dallas Morning News. “That’s by design and certainly we wanted to see how and what we do in the draft.
“We were talking about it as late as this morning. If you draft a tackle, how does that impact a player like Doug, whether or not you move him around? I’m sure he’s looking at it there as well.”
There’s little doubt Dallas will target an offensive lineman in the first couple rounds, but the interior of the line is a more pressing need than the tackle position. Dallas is one of a few teams to have spoken to veteran free agent Eric Winston this offseason but they’ve yet to make an offer to the former Texan and Chief, who is looking for $3-4 million annually.
