The Cowboys have addressed holes on both sides of the ball this offseason. But, coming off a 4-12 year, it’s far from a finished product.
To that end, they continue to scour talent for efficient, effective help along both lines. According to ESPN they will this week meet with defensive end Jason Jones and offensive guard/center Joe Looney.
With the departure of Greg Hardy, the looming suspension of Randy Gregory and the back surgery of DeMarcus Lawrence they need all the pass-rush help they can get.
Signing Benson Mayowa and drafting Ohio State’s Joey Bosa No. 4 overall would help. Adding Jones might, too. He had 9.5 sacks with the Lions from 2013-15 but is missed most of last season with a knee injury.
The Cowboys also find themselves in the market for a swing offensive lineman in the wake of Mackenzy Bernadeau’s free-agent departure to Jacksonville. Looney started six games for the Titans last season after three seasons with the 49ers. At only 25, he can play all three interior positions and could prevent the team from having to use a draft pick to fill this void.
Both signings would stick with the Cowboys’ off-season plan to find cheap deals on damaged goods. It’s economical. It’s efficient. Remains to be seen whether it will be effective.
