Charles Haley Thinks Cowboys Got a Steal in Randy Gregory

The Cowboys picked Gregory with the 60th overall pick in last weekend's draft

On Sunday night, soon-to-be Hall of Famer Charles Haley openly applauded the Dallas Cowboys’ selection of Randy Gregory in the second round of the draft.

The Cowboys’ draft room was said to have erupted in celebration after Gregory slipped to them at 60th overall. Gregory was viewed by many as a Top 15 pick on talent alone, but teams were scared away by off-the-field issues, including a failed drug test at the NFL Combine.

But the Cowboys felt that with Gregory, late in the second round, the risk was worth taking. Haley agrees.

The film that I saw, hey, the guy can get it done,” Haley said at the Taste of the NFL Tailgate Party at AT&T Stadium, per the Dallas Morning News. “I just can’t believe that they got him in the second round. The Cowboys got a steal. You can’t have enough pass rushers.

“The guy should come in with a chip on his shoulder from being a second-rounder. Just like a lot of those guys that got drafted later, you come here with an attitude ready to work, because most guys come in as a first rounder and they think they already got it. He’s got something to prove.”

The Cowboys will put a support system in place for Gregory in hopes of keeping him on the straight and narrow, and Haley says that system will involve everyone from Jerry Jones to Charles Haley, among other former Cowboys.

“He’s got an owner that’s not only going to stand with him, but stand in front of him and take some of the blows,” Haley said. “And Jerry [Jones] is not alone. He has a family of ex-players that love the Dallas Cowboys and are willing to come back and help.”
