On Monday, Houston Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney underwent microfracture surgery on his knee, a procedure that’s expected to keep him sidelined for nine months.

It’s the same kind of surgery Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer underwent last year, and kept him limited to one game a year ago and sidelined for the first three games of this season. Asked if he had any advice for Clowney, the first overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, Spencer preached patience.

"Take his time," Spencer said, per ESPN Dallas.

Spencer acknowledged that being patient might be hard for a young player like Clowney, who’s not yet established in the NFL, but warns that Clowney will be better off if he can resist the temptation to rush back.

"I think it would be even harder for him being a young player and being in the position he is in his career," Spencer said. "But you've got to take your time for your career to be there."
