DISD Athletes Sign in Record Numbers

Some of area's best prospects sign in DISD ceremony.

The DISD signing ceremony is always a hectic one, and this year was no different.

The ceremony at Ellis Davis Field House honored 90 student-athletes signing national letters of intent on ">National Signing Day. That number eclipsed last year's record of 74.

While not all were football players, the big names were, and some of the area's top players were from DISD schools.

Two of the Top 10 area players according to Rivals.com are DISD defensive backs and both signed on the dotted line on Wednesday.

They join a good group of defensive backs from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, who will be hoping to make their marks on the college game.

Kevin Brent of South Oak Cliff, the area's top-ranked recruit signed with Oklahoma, and should take his 4.4 speed in the 40 to the Oklahoma Sooners and contribute soon. You know a kid's a big shot when he turns down offers from Texas and USC. "I like everything about the school," Brent said. "But I've always wanted to be a Sooner since I was a child, so I'm just following my childhood dream."

Skyline's Steve Williams, No. 7 on the list, was the premiere name in a class of 13 football players moving on from Skyline. Williams will be joining Jeff Tedford in Berkeley to play for Cal.

The DISD ceremony is always one of the more colorful ceremonies around, and always the largest with 25 high schools boasting plenty of athletic talent to go around.

It's always been the case, but it's interesting to see how many athletes the DISD schools produce who go on and star in college, but no DISD teams seem to make it more than three, sometimes four rounds deep in the Texas High School Playoffs, at the most.

Consider this: DISD has 13 players in the Area Top 100 on Rivals.com. For you non-math majors, that's more than one out of every 10. Pretty amazing.
