The Dallas Marathon is donating food originally intended for runners to two local organizations after the race was cancelled.
Freezing rain and icy winds forced organizers to cancel Sunday's race, the first time the race was nixed in its more than 40-year history. That left marathon organizers with thousands of items of food that would have gone to 25,000 expected participants.
Now, that food will go to Dallas Life and Our Calling, two organizations that serve North Texas' homeless.
Dallas Marathon president Patrick Byerly said in a statement Wednesday that organizers were "grateful that the unused food will go to a great cause," despite the disappointment of the race not going forward.
