At a time when the Little Elm community is healing after the loss of Police Detective Jerry Walker, the Little Elm High School basketball team is having a breakout season.
The Lobos are ranked second in the state for 5A, which is the best in school history.
Head coach Rusty Segler recently won his 600th game – though he says it only means he's getting old – but this year's group might be his best yet.
And the team is led by star freshman guard R.J. Hampton. The 15-year-old is averaging more than 20 points a game on varsity, and he's ranked among the top freshman in the entire country.
"It's fun making an impact, so I can help them and help us go as far as we need to. And hopefully, we'll make it all the way to state," Hampton said.
His personality is as mature as his game.
"I probably am the more mature type. My mom wouldn't say that, but I would," Hampton said.

The scholarships are already coming in for the young man who hasn't finished his freshman season.
"I have been offered by Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, SMU, TCU so far, and then I have some other schools looking at me," he said.
But the team has more immediate goals, and coach Segler says there is room for improvement.
"We have to get better. We have this length of time to get better, and I said, 'If you get better everyday, then people better watch out,'" Segler said.
