House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will be a headliner of Texas Democrats' virtual convention, which was moved online over fears of the coronavirus.
The announcement Tuesday gives Texas Democrats one of their most prominent convention speakers in recent years. Democrats have been shut out of power at the Texas Capitol for nearly two decades, but need just nine seats to flip the Texas House for the first time since 2003.
The virtual convention begins Monday. Democrats had originally booked San Antonio's convention center but moved the party gathering online as coronavirus cases began to climb in Texas in March.
Texas Republicans are still planning to hold their convention in person in Houston in July.
President Donald Trump threatened Monday to pull the Republican National Convention out of North Carolina if the state's Democratic governor doesn't immediately sign off on allowing a full-capacity gathering in August.
Vice President Mike Pence said Monday on Fox News Channel that convention planning takes months and suggested a state that's loosened more restrictions could host. He went on to praise reopenings in Texas, Florida and Georgia.
The Democratic National Convention has already delayed their convention from July until August, and are more open to the idea of it unfolding virtually.
