Federal Judge Upholds Mining Ban Near Grand Canyon

On Tuesday, a federal judge upheld the U.S. Department of the Interior’s 20-year ban on new uranium mines on one million acres near the Grand Canyon, The Associated Press reported. A U.S District Judge ruled that former Interior Secretary Ken Salazar did not violate any laws by prohibiting new mining requests, rejecting a challenge by a coalition of mining industry groups. Representatives of the groups said they are reviewing the decision. They have 60 days to appeal.
