A Look at Recent Vehicular Attacks Around the World

Canadian police are investigating an incident in Toronto in which a van driver jumped a curb in a busy intersection and plowed into pedestrians, killing 10.

The attack shares at least one similarity with many other attacks in past years: It involved a vehicle. Many (but not all) of these incidents involve terrorism. Here's a look at some other attacks:

Oct. 31, 2017: New York City: 8 killed

A truck driver deliberately drove a rented Home Depot truck onto a lower Manhattan bicycle path in what authorities called a "cowardly act of terror" in October 2017. Officials found a note inside the truck after written by the driver saying that he had committed the attack for ISIS. (Full story.)

Aug. 17 and 18, 2017: Barcelona and Cambrils, Spain: 14 killed, scores hurt

A van plunged into a crowd in a tourist hotspot in Barcelona, mowing down pedestrians. As authorities hunted for the driver, five more people in what is suspected as a terrorist cell car plowed into a crowd at a nearby beach resort, where they were shot and killed by police. (Full story.)

Aug. 12, 2017: Charlottesville, Va.: 1 killed, 19+ injured

A man was arrested after driving a car into a crowd of counter-protesters at a white nationalist rally spurred by the possible removal of a Confederate statue. (Full story.)

Aug. 9, 2017: Levallois-Perret, France: 6 injured

A driver slammed a BMW into a group of French soldiers in a Paris suburb, injuring six of them. French officials detained an Algerian national after a high-speed chase following the incident. (Full story.)

June 19, 2017: London: 1 dead, 11 injured

A van plowed into a London crowd near Finsbury mosque, killing one person and injuring 11. Witnesses heard the driver laughing after the van crashed into the crowd. (Full story.)

June 3, 2017: London: 8 dead, 48 injured 

A vehicle barreled into pedestrians at London Bridge, then men armed with knives jumped out and attacked people at a busy market, killing 8 and injuring 48. The police fatally shot the three attackers. (Full story โ€” an eighth person died after this report.)

May 18, 2017: New York City: 1 dead, 22 injured 

A wrong-way driver drove his sedan down a sidewalk in Times Square for three-and-a-half blocks before crashing into a pole. He was apprehended after trying to fight police. (Full story.)

April 7, 2017: Stockholm: 4 dead, 22 injured

A stolen beer truck plowed through a crowd of shoppers in Sweden's capital. The driver's application for residency in Sweden had been rejected, and he was supposed to have left the country. (Full story โ€” a fifth victim died after this report.)

March 22, 2017: London's Westminster Bridge: 4 dead, 40 injured

A knife-wielding man went on a deadly rampage in the heart of Britain's seat of power, plowing a car into pedestrians on London's Westminster Bridge before stabbing a police officer to death inside the gates of Parliament. (Full story.)

Jan. 8, 2017: Jerusalem: 4 dead, 17 wounded 

A Palestinian man ran his truck into a crowd of Israeli soldiers at a popular area for tourists with a sweeping view of the city. Israel's prime minister said the attacker was likely a supporter of ISIS. (Full story.)

Dec. 19, 2016: Berlin: 12 dead, 56 injured

A Tunisian national who sought asylum in Germany drove a stolen truck into a crowded Christmas marketplace in Berlin, sparking a manhunt that would eventually stretch across Europe. (Full story.)

Nov. 28, 2016: Ohio State University: 11 injured

An Ohio State University student ran his car into a group of pedestrians at the college campus and began stabbing people with a butcher knife before he was shot to death by a police officer. (Full Story.)

July 14, 2016: Nice, France: 86 dead, 200+ injured
