Police say an Italian marathoner who vanished after crossing the finish line of the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday has been found safe.

Gianclaudio P. Marengo, an Italian national, went missing after crossing the finish line of the marathon at about 3 p.m. inside Central Park, police say.

Marengo, who is 30 and only speaks Italian, had been staying at the Sleep Inn in Long Island City, Queens. He had come to the country with a group of fellow Italian runners, who reported him missing.

He was missing for two days before turning up at a No. 2 subway station in midtown, police say. He was still wearing his running clothes when he was found.

Police said the group told them he was mentally disabled. But San Patrignano drug rehabilitation center spokesman Matteo Diotalevi says Marengo has no mental health issues.

He says Patrignano is a fragile person who discovered a passion for running after years of drug dependency.

An unofficial total of 50,229 entrants started the 45th running of the NYC Marathon, pounding 26.2 miles of pavement through the five boroughs.
