Woman Who Drove Car Into Water Faces Charges

A Galveston woman police say ran over a 75-year-old man before driving her car carrying her infant son into a bayou has been arrested.

The Galveston County Daily News reports 30-year-old Latonya Kirven was charged Tuesday with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and driving while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle.

Galveston Police Chief Henry Porretto said witnesses saw Kirven argue with a man and then strike him with her car. Shortly after, police got calls about a vehicle entering the water near a boat ramp.

A man who swam into the bayou to rescue the baby says he and others tried to help the woman, but she resisted.

She remained Wednesday in Galveston County jail on bonds totaling $160,000. Jail records did not list an attorney.
