Boy Shoots Self in Abdomen Outside Weatherford High School, Police Say

A boy shot himself in the abdomen outside Weatherford High School forcing a lockdown on the Parker County school's campus Tuesday afternoon, police say.

Weatherford High school resource officers were alerted to the presence of a juvenile who appeared to have a handgun in his waistband near one of the school's "out-buildings" around 2 p.m., police said.

Officers notified administrators and the campus was immediately put on lockdown, Weatherford police said.

Police said the boy fled into a wooded area on foot when officers arrived and he was seen "armed with a handgun and to be making threats to himself."

As officers approached the juvenile, he shot himself in the abdomen, police said. He was taken to a hospital outside of Parker County.

During the incident, students and staff were safely inside Weatherford High School, police said. There is no incidcation that they those inside the building were in danger.

The campus lockdown was lifted at about 3:15 p.m.

The boy will remain under observation until it is determined if charges will be filed against him, police said.
