The United States has broken ground on a new $155 million consulate in the Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo.
U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Anthony Wayne participated in a ceremony Thursday in the city across the border from Laredo, Texas, along with the governors of Tamaulipas and Coahuila states.
Five international bridges connect the city with Texas, making it the busiest commercial crossing on the U.S.-Mexico border.
In April 2010, a small explosive device was thrown over the fence surrounding the U.S. consulate, causing minor damage. The U.S. State Department temporarily closed the location. The extended security perimeter of the consulate snarled traffic and frustrated its neighbors.
