A teenager was killed Friday afternoon in a shooting along the 600 block of North Denley Drive near the Eloise Lundy Recreation Center, police say.
Police identified the victim as 15-year-old Luis Carlos Guevara of Dallas.
Police said the teen was sitting with another teen in a parked car on Denley when a brown Dodge Caravan pulled up nearby. The teen witness said they were then approached by a 13-year-old Latin male who started firing into the car.
The latest news from around North Texas.
The driver sped off, but crashed into a nearby utility pole. Meanwhile the shooter and two others, a 13-year-old white male and a 20-year-old black male, all left the scene.
The teen injured in the shooting was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died. The teen who was driving the car suffered only minor injuries in the crash.
Dallas police have not confirmed a motive or reason for the confrontation.
Douglas Grace, a business owner and community activist, says the news hits home.
He grew up near Denley Street, so the thought of a teenager losing his life in the neighborhood that nurtured his is concerning.
“It’s scary. Having a 15, 16-year-old myself it’s scary. Because I ask myself is this going to be my daughter? Will this be my nephew?,” he said.
Police were still searching for the suspects Friday evening.
"I want my kids to be able to come outside. I want my kids to be able to not worry about walking to the store or walking to get something to eat because of a senseless drive by shooting and different things like that," said Grace. "If you know that you got the resources and the ability to go and stop a confrontation that’s happening, go and do it. If not, call the police."
A $5,000 reward is offered for information that lead to an arrest in the case.
