Southwest Airlines Mechanics ‘Overwhelmingly' Reject Proposed Contract

Southwest Airlines mechanics rejected a proposed contract offer that fell short of the pay rates they wanted, sending the two sides back to the negotiating table six years after talks first began.

The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association, which represents Southwest’s mechanics, announced the results Tuesday after several weeks of voting. The outcome wasn’t a surprise after a September leak of the vote tally, part way through the voting period, showing a majority of members opposing the deal — one that the union leadership declined to endorse.

The union agreed to let mechanics vote on what leaders described as a “lowball” offer as a way to show Southwest where their employees stand, according to the union’s president.
