A Tarrant County jury continues to hear testimony Wednesday in the sentencing phase of the trial of a man who admitted to a drunken driving crash that killed a 5th grader.
Walter Chidyausiku pleaded guilty Tuesday morning to intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault in connection with a crash that killed Tavian "TJ" Sabur. The boy and his mother, Tina Reese, were just three blocks from home when Chidyausiku ran a stop sign and collided with their car on Sept. 1, 2011.
Arlington Police Officer Jessica Rodriguez was on the stand for almost two hours Wednesday morning. She interviewed several eyewitnesses to the crash and took dozens of photos of the vehicles.
On Wednesday afternoon an independent crash consultant from CrashDynamics will testify and estimate how fast the defendant was going when he drove through the stop sign.
The intoxication manslaughter charge carries a penalty of probation to 20 years in prison. The intoxication assault charge is probation to 10 years in prison. The sentences would be served concurrently.
