Ron Kirk Works Trade Deal With S. Korea

Kirk says Detroit has to manufacture more "consumer friendly" vehicles

Former Dallas Mayor, now U.S. Trade Representative, Ron Kirk is negotiating a trade deal that would open South Korea to more U.S. made vehicles.

Currently only 1 percent of the cars in South Korea are American made, while the U.S. imports billions of dollars worth of South Korean vehicles and parts.

Kirk said even if South Korea does open it's doors to more U.S. made vehicles, Detroit is going to have to manufacture cars that are more appealing to consumers, smaller and more energy efficient.

If approved, the trade agreement with South Korea would be the largest since NAFTA.

Kirk said global trade is one of the keys to reviving the struggling global economy.
