Richardson has been named one of the nation’s Top 15 government-heavy -- and therefore recession-resistant -- cities by U.S. News & World Report.
The magazine said the Dallas County city, which has 0.05 government employees per capita, comes in at No. 12.
But Bill Sproull, president of the Richardson Economic Development Partnership, told U.S. News that the city is a hub for the telecommunications industry. Many of its workers commute in every day for work, he said.
He said local employees and residents are also attracted by the University of Texas at Dallas, which is located in Richardson.
Compared to other sectors, government employment has not contracted as much as other industries, according to the magazine.
The government has added an average of 5,000 workers per month during the past year, while other industries have lost an average of 448,000 workers during the same amount of time, U.S. News reported.
