Patient Briefly Steals Ambulance, Flees Fort Worth Hospital

A man transported to a Fort Worth hospital Tuesday morning bolted from the emergency room and sped off in the ambulance that had just delivered him.

According to MedStar Mobile Healthcare, which provides mobile ambulance service in Fort Worth and 14 other Tarrant County cities, the patient was dropped off at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth at about 9:12 a.m. when he suddenly ran out of the emergency room doors.

The patient then jumped into the driver's seat and sped away.

The man only drove about four blocks before JPS security found and stopped him near Allen Avenue and Smith Street.

The undamaged ambulance was recovered about four minutes after it was taken and the patient was returned to JPS for treatment. Officials have not said why the man was hospitalized or why he fled the ER.

It is not yet known if the man will face any charges for stealing the ambulance.
