NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 in partnership with Communities In Schools (CIS), Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities, Albertsons and Tom Thumb, collected $578,362 in their second annual Supporting Our Schools / Apoyando A Nuestras Escuelas initiative, over a $200,000 increase in contributions compared to last year.
The school supply drive focuses on raising awareness about classroom needs and what communities can do to help local students and teachers in seven counties across North Texas to have the necessary resources for a successful school year.
The drive ran July 1 through July 28 and encouraged viewers to go to any Albertsons or Tom Thumb location to donate $10, to provide a backpack and school supplies to a student.
The latest news from around North Texas.
CIS serves students K-12 in affected by a variety of issues including an inability to read at grade level, teenage parenthood, physical and mental health problems, homelessness, or simply the feeling of not fitting in. At least 91 percent of the students CIS serves are living below the poverty level, and 10 percent have one or more parents that are incarcerated. Without this additional attention or mediation, these students may disconnect or drop out.
CIS partners with 23 school districts, including 147 local campuses, in Dallas, Denton, Collin, Ellis, Kaufman, Tarrant, and Wise counties to place full time social workers onsite to provide services and resources to meet students’ needs.
The Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities provides opportunities for more than three thousand young people in North Texas facing barriers to reach their fullest potential by providing a mentorship program, unique educational experiences, leadership camps, and more.
“The Supporting Our Schools school supply drive has proven that individuals in our community are willing to step up and help out with this effort to support others who face chronic socio-academic issues. This year’s collection was able to provide the funds needed for both CIS and Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities to reach their goals, providing school supplies for students in need in our community,” said Tom Ehlmann, NBC 5 President and General Manager.
“This is truly a worthwhile community effort and we appreciate the generous donations from both our English and Spanish-speaking audiences and the partnership with Albertsons and Tom Thumb. Together, we are able to contribute to a making a positive impact in our community through our Apoyando a Nuestras Escuelas initiative,”said John Treviño, Telemundo 39 President and General Manager.
