McKinney Woman Pleads for Help Finding Father’s Killer

The shooting happened around 7 p.m. Friday, March 8

McKinney police are asking for the public's help to locate a suspected killer.

Just after 7 p.m. on March 8, police dispatchers started to receive 911 calls about a shooting outside a home in the 800 block of Maples Avenue.

Police said an altercation led to shots being fired into a crowd of people who were gathered in front of the house.

James Penegar, 55, was stuck and died a short time later at Medical City McKinney, police said.

Clarence Smith lives at the home where the shooting happened.

He said the group was drinking and playing dice when someone started to shoot.

"He was in the right place, but at the wrong time," Smith said.

Penegar's daughter, Takila Penegar, said she'd just seen her dad 15 minutes before the shooting at a family's house nearby.

She rushed to the scene.

"I can't get that image out of my head. I can't sleep, I’m losing sleep, no appetite," Takila Penegar said.

Takila Penegar and Smith said any dispute didn't involve James Penegar. They believed the bullets were meant for someone else.

"Please come forward, even if it was an accident, which I feel like it was, I feel like it was accidental because my daddy bothered nobody," Takila Penegar said.

Detectives gathered statements at the scene and are now asking for the public's help to locate the suspect, who police believe drove away in a silver passenger car with two others inside.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Det. Rimpel at 972-547-2811 or

Crimestoppers is offering a $5,000 reward.
