Robbers Who Killed Man May Have Only Gotten $1

One man is dead following a late-night robbery and shooting in Dallas.

Police said two people approached a van as the driver parked at the Town Club Apartments in the 2400 block of Arroyo Avenue at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The man and the woman approached each side of the vehicle and demanded cash from the driver and Jose Luis Aguirre, the passenger. The driver handed over his wallet, which contained only $1, but Aguirre got out of the van.

The woman then opened fire, striking Aguirre, 43.

He was taken Parkland Hospital, where he later died. The driver of the van wasn't injured.

Police said the Aguirre's wallet was stolen, though it is not clear how much money, if any, he had on him at the time. The duo may have got away with only the $1 in the driver's wallet, police said.

A witness saw the man and woman leave in a small gray vehicle.

Police said several recent killings of Latino workers and contractors may have been committed by robbers who think the victims are carrying large amounts of cash.

"We’re looking at some previous crimes that might have been related to this in the area, as well as interviewing witnesses who might have some information," Lt. Craig Miller said.

Friends of Aguirre who were grieving outside his home Thursday said they were angry about the killing.

"He’s nice person. He’s working hard all the time,” said Javier Hernandez, a remodeling contractor who had known Aguirre for many years.

Hernandez said no one he knows has much cash to carry, especially in the current economy.

"Everybody I know is pretty tight with the money, you know," he said.

Hernandez is trying to raise money for Aguirre's funeral.

No suspects have been named and no arrests have been made in connection with the fatal robbery.
