Loaner Life Vests Disappearing From Grapevine Lake

Loaner life jacket stands were installed after a Grapevine firefighter drowned at the lake in 2016

Loaner life jackets are disappearing from Grapevine Lake.

The vests are free to use with one condition: Return them when you're done.

But Grapevine Fire Chief Darrell Brown said that isn't happening.

So far this year Brown said about half of the 130 donated vests that have been put out have walked off with those who use them.

"We're just asking those, hey, don't take them home. Put them back at the stands and leave them here for somebody else to use them when you leave and they'll be here when you come back hopefully,” Brown said.

Five loaner life jacket stands were installed at Grapevine Lake after Grapevine firefighter and paramedic James McKenzie drowned at the lake in 2016.

"If it can happen to James, it can happen to anybody," Brown said.

So far this year, six people have drowned at Grapevine Lake

None of them were wearing life jackets.
