A Houston-area teenager who says he was beaten by a school district police officer has received $60,000 to settle his lawsuit seeking $1 million.
The Houston Chronicle reported Monday that the deal involves a student who no longer enrolled in the Pasadena Independent School District.
The student's parents sued earlier this year, alleging the then-16-year-old boy was severely beaten in May 2014 while trying to retrieve his confiscated cellphone.
The teen allegedly uttered a profanity while being escorted from the school. The federal civil rights lawsuit says the officer who then tried to arrest the teen used a baton to strike the student at least 18 times, causing bruises and cuts.
A Pasadena ISD spokeswoman did not immediately comment on the settlement reached Nov. 2.
