Hiker, 53, at Texas Park Dies of Apparent Heat Stroke

Authorities say a hiker has died after suffering apparent heat stroke during the Fourth of July holiday at a Texas park.

Officials with Palo Duro Canyon State Park in Canyon say the 53-year-old victim was overcome by heat on Monday afternoon. Superintendent Shannon Blalock says the woman was airlifted to an Amarillo hospital, where she later died.

The victim's name wasn't immediately released.

National Weather Service records show temperatures reached the high 90s Monday in the area. Temperatures topped 100 degrees on Tuesday in Amarillo, about 30 miles north of Palo Duro Canyon Park.

Forecasters predicted temperatures in the 100s in the Amarillo area through Thursday.
