The mayor of a small Central Texas town has found dozens of dog carcasses illegally dumped on city property and has demanded an investigation.
Marlin Mayor Elizabeth Nelson found the site near City Park. She was following up on a tip that men were shooting stray dogs and dumping the bodies near a stream, according a report that first appeared in Tuesday's Marlin Democrat.
What she found, according to the report, were a massive number of garbage bags containing the deceased animals, as well as scattered canine skeletal remains, that she described as gruesome and unacceptable.
Nelson said the site is an area used by public works employees to dispose of landscaping debris and she could not provide an accurate count of the carcasses.
She said investigators were looking into allegations that city employees had killed the dogs, but said residents may have been illegally dumping the remains of pets. Stray dogs are a serious problem in Marlin.
