Surrounded by Police, Distressed Man Shoots Self

Man to be airlifted to Dallas hospital

A distressed man shot himself Tuesday afternoon during a standoff with Granbury police.

Granbury police were called to the Big Lots parking lot along U.S. Highway 377 and Acton Highway where a man was reported to be threatening himself in a parked truck while having a telephone conversation with his girlfriend.

Officers tried to communicate with the man, who was believed to be armed, but he refused.

Police blocked public access to the parking lot and surrounding area while keeping an eye on the man from a distance.

At about 2:30 p.m., police said the man shot himself.  According to Granbury Chief of Police Mitch Galvan, the man, whose identity has not been released, was conscious and breathing after the shooting and was flown by air ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

The man's condition is not known.

Granbury police were joined at the scene by State Troopers and deputies with the Hood County Sheriff's Department.  At times, from Chopper 5, officers were seen taking defensive positions behind patrol cars while carrying assault rifles.

There were no other injuries reported in connection with the incident.
