‘Do Not Call' Complaints on the Rise in Texas: Report

You may know this firsthand, but now there is more proof that telemarketers are getting around the national "Do Not Call" list.

A new report shows this year alone more than 225,000 Texans have complained about violations of the "Do Not Call" registry, and the largest chunk of those complaints has come from the 817 area code – the Fort Worth area.

Tommy Prud'homme, consumer protection chief in the Texas Attorney General's Office, tells Austin NBC affiliate KXAN some people simply don't care about the list.

"They're just out there to scam people, and they don't care whether there's a Do Not Call list or not," Prud'homme said.

The Attorney General's Office goes after people making illegal calls, claiming more than $8 million in damages and penalties from violators, KXAN reported.

Even if you're not on the Do Not Call list, you're not supposed to be getting robocalls. The federal government banned them back in 2009.

You can file a complaint or register for the registries through the Federal Trade Commission or the Texas Attorney General's Office websites or by calling toll-free 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236).
