Officials with the Grand Prairie Police Department said officers were called to a burglary in progress at 6:51 a.m. where someone had smashed a window at a home on the 2000 block of Birchwood Lane.

Police officers arrived but were not able to find the person described.  About an hour later, officers patrolling the area noticed a person walk up to the same house and spray a chemical on the house.

As officers approached the person, they said he was trying to light the chemical.

The man ran to the house across the street and barricaded himself inside.

"After several hours of communicating with the suspect to surrender, SWAT was able to make entry and take the suspect into protective custody," police said in a statement. "He was transported to Parkland Hospital where he will undergo a 72 hour evaluation."

The investigation into the attempted arson is ongoing and no further information has been released.
