Denton Guyer Team Honors Student Killed in Accident

The Denton Guyer JV basketball team took to the court for the first time Tuesday night since teammate Corey West was killed this past weekend.

Police said West was crossing Loop 288 at McKinney Street on Sunday at about 7:30 p.m. when the driver of a Jeep struck and killed him.

Officers said the driver of the Jeep stopped and remained at the scene and did not appear to be under the influence of any substances.

During Tuesday's game, Denton Guyer head basketball coach Grant Long reflected on West.

"I mean, he would come in doing back flips, literally. He was always smiling and laughing," said Long.

Before both JV and varsity games Tuesday, the school held a moment of silence for West and draped his jersey across an empty chair.

Denton Guyer basketball players wore red carnations on their warm-up jerseys and joined West's family at center court for a moment of silence.

"This is the worst thing I've ever gone through," said West's brother, Reshaun Conely. "It's kind of like losing an important body part that you're used to every day. It knocks you off balance."

"He was always filled with laughter. He never stopped smiling," said close friend Chris Houston.

Long said West was an incredibly positive person for his team.

"He always had a positive attitude. He was that player that was always there for his teammates, always encouraged the guys," Long said.

Conely said he hopes people remember his brother's spirit.
