Firefighter rescue teams recovered a construction worker who was killed when he was buried in a trench collapse on Friday afternoon.

Lewisville officials said contractors were working in the Indian Oaks subdivision on a city project when the trench collapsed near Wanderlust and Buffalo Bend drives, burying a person just before 2 p.m.

James Kunke, community relations director for the City of Lewisville, says it was the construction crew who called 911.

"They actually were still trying to dig when the first responders got here and had them stop," said Kunke. "The firefighters confirmed he was deceased."

Firefighters with the Lewisville Fire Department and Coppell Fire Department trench rescue team secured the trench and recovered the contractor's body.

The victim was identified by the city as Carlos Caballo, 37, an employee of 2R Construction. The company didn't immediately respond to NBC 5's request for comment.

Caballo's brother told NBC 5 that Caballo arrived in the United States from Mexico about six months ago.

"My heart goes to the whole family and crew members who work there is hurting," said neighbor Adela Herrera.

The construction site was a city project to replace streets, water and wastewater lines in the subdivision. It was being performed by private contractors, said Kunke.

The crew Friday was replacing a sewer line about 12 feet deep.

OSHA is taking over the investigation.

The scene and section of Buffalo Bend Drive will remain closed until OSHA completes its investigation.
