Construction Won’t Slow Cyclists on White Rock Trail

Cyclists around White Rock Lake are popping wheelies that a bike trail won't be closed during road construction.

The Texas Department of Transportation planned to close the intersection of Northwest Highway and West Lawther Drive on Tuesday while crews worked on a project for about a year.

But a city official says the intersection will remain open, the Dallas Morning News reported.

"(I'm) very excited, like, extremely excited," Gayle Mortola said. "This is really good for us and all the people that train out here, because we like to use this intersection for ingress and egress to the lake."

Mortola rides around the lake, sometimes 18 miles a day.

The news is also good for Boyd Wallace at Dallas Bike Works. Wallace, who opened the business almost three months ago, said cyclists just passing by make up more than half of his sales. They buy "tune-ups, tires fixed, patches, Gatorade -- whatever they need to get around the lake and get home safely," he said.
