Community Pays Tribute to Slain Officer in North Dallas

DPD's North Central Station filled with heartfelt messages

A police car frequently used by Sgt. Michael Smith has turned into a memorial outside the Dallas Police Department's North Central Station.

Flowers, balloons and personal messages cover the police car.

"I can't describe the loss. He was a dedicated officer and a family man," said Sgt. Karl Kemper. "He's just a good man. He was so dedicated to his job of protecting others."

On Thursday night, officers based at the substation rushed to downtown Dallas to provide support.

"When we got the call, my whole unit came to respond and help out on whatever was needed," Kemper said. "I've been with the department for 26 years. I've seen a number of officers fall in the line of duty and you don't get used to it."

Smith's funeral is scheduled for Thursday.
