Arlington Police Lt. Chris Cook said the boy was operating the bike in the 500 block of McQueary Street when he lost control and hit the mailbox, knocking it over at about 7:15 p.m.

Police said the boy — later identified as Demarion Levi — was transported to Arlington Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

A second child, a 10-year-old girl, was also transported to a hospital for an ankle injury. Police said her involvement in the crash is unknown.

Other children may have witnessed the crash, police said.

Cook said it appeared to be a high-speed impact crash.

In a news release, police said it is still too early to determine exactly what happened. Investigators are currently working to piece together a timeline of events.

NBC 5's Chris Van Horne contributed to this report.
