Child, 5, Dies After Being Found in Hot Car

A child found inside a hot car Sunday afternoon died after being rushed to the hospital, Burleson police say.

Police received a call shortly after 1 p.m. from a home in the 2700 block of Lakeside Drive about an autistic boy who had been missing for approximately 15 minutes, according to Sally Ellertson, Burleson public information officer.

A woman, who identified herself to police as the child's grandmother, told officers that several people had checked the home and they couldn't find the boy, according to Ellertson. Officers joined the search to cover a nearby lake and the area around nearby Texas Highway 174, Ellertson said.

Burleson firefighters arrived shortly before 1:30 p.m. and joined officers and more than a dozen neighbors in searching the area around the home, Ellertson said.

The child was found in the back seat of a vehicle parked on the street in front of the family's home, Ellertson said. Firefighters tried to cool the child and began CPR before he was taken by MedStar to Cooks Children's Hospital, according to Ellertson.

MedStar said the boy, identified as Zachary Elshaarawy, was in critical condition when they transported him to the hospital at 2:05 p.m.

Elshaarawy was pronounced dead at 3 p.m. Sunday, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office. The medical examiner did not release information regarding what caused his death.

Ellertson said the temperature at the time of the search was approximately 100 degrees
