Driver Dead After Crashing Into 18-Wheeler: Dallas Co. Sheriff's Department

A driver is dead after slamming into the back of a tractor-trailer while being pursued by a Lewisville police officer on Interstate 35E in Downtown Dallas Wednesday morning, Lewisville police say.

Lewisville police said one of their officers was driving a marked police car through Dallas at about 10 a.m. to pick up a prisoner at another agency when he noticed a person behind him driving erratically.

The officer reported the vehicle nearly struck him as it passed and that the officer then noticed other behaviors that indicated the driver may be intoxicated.

The officer turned on his emergency lights and tried to stop the driver, but police said the driver continued on, struck a concrete median and then slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer near the Woodall Rodgers Freeway.

Authorities said the driver died from injuries suffered in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

As of 12:30 p.m., all southbound lanes of I-35E remain closed, though traffic is being allowed to pass on the shoulder.

The crash is being investigated by the Dallas County Sheriff's Department.
