Austin Golf Course Put on National List of Historic Places

An Austin golf course has been added to the National Register of Historic Places for its place in the civil rights movement.

The Austin American-Statesman reports the Lions Municipal Golf Course is considered one of the first public golf courses in the South to have been desegregated.

The designation could make it more difficult for the University of Texas System to go through with plans to turn the property into a mixed-use development.

The university system and the University of Texas had urged the National Park Service to designate only a limited portion of the golf course, known by the nickname "Muny."

University of Texas President Gregory L. Fenves says that the school is reviewing the decision.
