Traffic Alert: Lane Changes Through Mid-Cities

Changing traffic patterns through the Mid-Cities could throw drivers for a loop this weekend.

Traffic will be moved to the new TEXpress lanes in the center of State Highway 183, prompting changes to on-ramps and exits all the way through the 820 interchange.

Traffic headed west on SH 183/121 will switch lanes just before the North East Mall interchange.
The exit from SH 183/121 West to IH820 South will also shift from a left exit, where it has been for years, to a right exit from the new TEXpress lanes.

"It's hectic. I'm sure they're trying to do a good job, but it's getting a little frustrating because it's been going on for a while," said Allan Foret, who drives the stretch regularly. "I think when they get it done it will be nice."

Changes can catch drivers off guard and cause confusion.

"There's quite a few accidents. I think probably the result of people trying to read the signs. There's a lot of signs," Foret said. "It's hard to pay attention to your driving. You're trying to read multiple signs, people are trying to change lanes. It gets pretty hectic out there."

Moving traffic to the new TEXpress lanes will force the closure of several on and off ramps. The on-ramps to SH183/121 from Norwood Drive and Precinct Line Road will be closed, and the off-ramps from IH820 South to SH-26/Davis Boulevard and Pipeline/Glenview Road will be closed.

The changes begin Saturday at 9 p.m. and are slated to last a month.
