Texas Tilapia Farmer Ordered to Destroy 50,000 Fish

The clock is ticking for Tai Nguyen.  He has until Thursday to get rid of all the fish at his southwest Houston, Texas fish farm, nearly 50,000 tilapia the state says he has no legal permit to raise.

"They claim that I have fish in this pond and on that ground they're revoking my permit," says Nguyen.  "Right now I'm facing the hardest obstacle ever. Accused of something I didn't do."

An inspector with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reported he found tilapia living inside one of Nguyen's outdoor ponds.  As an exotic fish, tilapia can't be raised outdoors if there is a risk they could feed into another waterway and mix with other species.

Nguyen says he has not had fish outdoors in three years and is in danger of losing a project he has invested more than $100,000 in over the past four years.
