A new and improved big blue crab is being set up in South Texas after the original 1950s artwork succumbed to weather.

Workers on Thursday laid out pieces of the fiberglass and aluminum body, pinchers and crab legs at the entrance to Rockport Beach Park. The 25-by-27 foot creation is a salute to blue crabs that are common in Rockport, a Gulf coast community about 25 miles northeast of Corpus Christi.

Rockport artist David Allgood took about nine months to create a replica of the original landmark that was made of chicken wire and paper products. Supporters raised about $11,000 for the project.

The original big blue crab artwork deteriorated after several hurricanes and by the late 1970s was removed and buried.
