Sheriff Saves Woman Over Lunch Break

A local sheriff is being hailed as a hero -- but not for catching bad guys.

Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson was at one of his favorite lunch spots, The Old Neighborhood Grill in Fort Worth, when he noticed a woman at a nearby table was in distress.

"The first thing she said was, 'Help,'" he said. "In a restaurant, that's not something you normally hear, and then she said, 'Does anybody know CPR?' Everybody just kind of froze, and the lady stood up, and then the younger daughter said, 'I think she's choking.'"

An employee went to get the owner, Peter Schroeder, but by the time he got out front, the sheriff had performed the Heimlich Maneuver.

"He sprang into action and did, hopefully, what I would have done," Schroeder said.

"She wasn't saying much," Anderson said. "She was gasping for air, and the daughter was saying, 'Thank you, thank you.' I was just trying to make sure she was all right."

Schroeder said the woman was in good spirits when she left.

"She looked at me and said, 'I put the sheriff to work,'" he said.

On Thursday, the sheriff received a T-shirt and apron from the restaurant making him an honorary employee.

Schroeder said Anderson is welcome at the Old Neighborhood Grill anytime he's not working for the county.
