One Dead After FWPD Shooting, Chase

Fort Worth police shot and killed a man believed to have robbed a bank after he allegedly opened fire on officers during a chase.

An off-duty police officer was working at the Woodhaven National Bank in Fort Worth at about 9 a.m. when police say it was robbed by a man who fled in a stolen vehicle.

Police spokesman Sgt. Pedro Criado said the officer had gone into the kitchen to get something to eat when he heard the bank being robbed. Police said the officer spotted the man believed to be the robber and saw him enter a stolen truck.

The off-duty officer chased the truck in his personal vehicle and called patrol.

Officers pursued the truck through a field on the southwest side of Lake Arlington. The truck got stuck in the field, and a man and a woman ran from the vehicle.

The man ran into the Lake Arlington Trailer Park and was followed on foot by officers. After opening fire on police, at least one of the officers returned fire and killed the man.

"The suspect turned around and fired shots at the two officers," Criado said. "One of our officers returned fire, striking the suspect an undetermined number of times.'

Police searched for the woman on horseback and with bloodhounds. Investigators did not release her description.

Fort Worth police have not released the identify of the man who was killed.

The Fort Worth Fire Department quickly extinguished a small brush fire sparked by the chase.

NBC 5's Chris Van Horne contributed to this report.
