Prom season is here and North Texas high school students are getting ready for their big night. This week, hundreds of young women have the chance to pick out the perfect dress for the big dance, for free.
“To me, it’s my equivalent of a wedding dress,” Sarah Ghormley said.
Ghormley is a high school student in Garland looking to cap off her senior year in style.
“I think the dress is really important because the dress is what makes you stand out,” she said.
To the 18-year-old, color is key.
“I'm looking for a blue or black dress,” she said.
At Prom Closet in Plano, there are more than 2,400 dresses on the racks.

Hundreds of students across North Texas will take advantage of the annual gown giveaway.
For the past eight years, a room inside Saint Andrew United Methodist Church transforms into a dreamland of dresses to help families cover the cost of the occasion.
"It’s always a concern because you’ve got to pay already for the prom ticket and other aspects of the prom," mother Mary Ann Ghormley said.
All the dresses are donated.
For organizers, the best part is watching a girl’s face light up when they find the right dress.
The look isn't complete without accessories and shoes also available for free.
For Sarah, the head-to-toe “shopping spree” is the first step in making it the prom night she always pictured.
Prom Closet will be open Wednesday and Thursday from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
St. Andrew United Methodist Church is located at 1401 Mira Vista Drive in Plano.
