Galveston Military Shop Closes After 42 Years

After 42 years, a vintage military shop located in downtown Galveston has closed its doors.

The Galveston County Daily News reports Col. Bubbie's Strand Surplus Senter closed Wednesday after owner Suzie Reiswerg decided to retire. The store was named for her husband, Meyer Reiswerg, who died five years ago. Suzie Reiswerg says the store was his passion.

She says, "He called everybody Bubbie if he couldn't remember their name and then everyone called him the colonel."

Reiswerg said she cried a lot on the last day.

She says the shop sold to both casual and serious collectors and was a favorite for battle re-enactors and theatrical productions.

She says most of the leftover stock has been sold to a liquidation company and she'll sell the property after it's cleared out.
